HOLY WEEK IN TUDELA
BED4U 24/03/2014
Holy Week is an ideal time to visit Tudela, the capital of Ribera Navarra, since on these dates two of the most important festivals of the year are celebrated in the city, declared of National Tourist Interest: El volatín and La Bajada del Ángel . Two very curious and old festivals that date back to the 16th century.
On Holy Saturday at 10 in the morning the Volatín begins in the Plaza de los Fueros . A wooden doll hangs down from the balcony of the Casa del Reloj and when the pyrotechnic cigar that it carries explodes, it begins to “volley” or turns on its axis until it loses all its clothes. It is a very particular version of the Judas burning tradition that takes place in many localities in the area.
The next day, on the same stage, the Bajada del Ángel takes place. Tradition dictates that, at 9 o'clock in the morning, a child dressed as an angel descends to a temple placed in the House of the Clock where the image of the Virgin covered with her veil of mourning awaits, which the little angel takes away before the popular joy , symbolizing the resurrection of his son .
